Octet

About Octet

Octet is an organic chemistry study tool for students working through a first or second course: reactions, reagents and functional groups to look up, drill and connect. It runs in your browser.

What is in the libraries

A fixed dataset: 83 reactions, each tagged with mechanism family, starting material, product, conditions, stereochemistry and regiochemistry; 63 reagents with what each does; 25 functional groups with general formulae and typical reactivity; and pKa, IR and NMR reference tables given as ranges. The dataset is Octet's own and names no outside source for its entries. The 16 guides take up the questions a single record cannot answer, such as choosing between two mechanisms or reading a spectrum.

How it is meant to be used

Look a reaction or reagent up, then test yourself on it: there are flashcards built from each collection, a daily quiz, side-by-side comparisons and printable study sheets. The reference pages, search, favourites, notes and guides are never gated; the paid tier adds study volume, such as the full flashcard decks, quiz rounds beyond the free daily one, and printing the study sheets.

What the values are not

They are study values, the kind a course examines on. A shift or pKa range here is not a measurement of your compound, and when a number matters for laboratory work, the primary literature or the supplier's datasheet is the authority. Octet does not cover safe handling: check the safety data sheet for any reagent before you use it.

Who runs it

One independent developer builds Octet and keeps it going, alongside ChemTable, PhysRef, CalcRef and StatRise. Guides are published under the Octet name with no personal byline, and their structured data lists the Octet organization as author. No chemistry degree or teaching post is claimed. A guide is dated by the last change made to its text.
